Bosch e-bike motor: identify the generation and find the right spare parts
Anyone looking for parts for a Bosch drive rarely fails because of availability, but because of identification. Active Line, Performance Line and Performance Line CX look alike, yet differ markedly in bearings, chainring interface and housing.
How to identify your drive unit:
- Read the type plate: The designation is printed on the underside of the motor, usually starting with BDU. BDU2xx denotes the second and third generation, BDU3xx the fourth.
- Look at the chainring interface: Older generations use a large lockring, newer ones a more compact interface. That determines which lockring tool fits.
- Check the bike's model year: Bikes up to model year 2019 almost always carry Gen 2 or Gen 3; from 2020 onwards Gen 4 predominates.
Why this matters: Crankshaft bearings and seals differ between generations in dimensions and design. A bearing set from the wrong generation can sometimes be pressed in, but it causes play and soon the next failure.
