Shimano STEPS error codes: E010, W011 and what is really behind them
Shimano STEPS reports faults with short codes on the display. The first letter alone says a lot: a W is a warning; according to Shimano, the product may have a temporary problem. An E stands for a possible malfunction.
The codes according to the Shimano user manual (E8000)
- W011: The riding speed cannot be detected. Assistance only works up to a lower speed than usual. Possible causes according to Shimano: the sensor is not positioned correctly or the magnet has fallen off. For this, Shimano recommends the dealer.
- E010: A system error has been detected. There is no assistance while riding. Shimano recommends switching the battery off and on again using its button.
- E020: A communication error between the battery and the drive unit. Check that the cable between the drive unit and the battery is connected correctly.
- E021: The battery meets the system standards but is not supported.
For newer drives such as EP8 or E6100, the manuals no longer contain a code table. There, Shimano refers to the online error database.
Resetting and checking
To reset, Shimano states: switch the battery off using the button and remove it from the mount. If the error persists after switching back on, the specialist dealer is the one to contact. Before you replace parts, check the contacts, the cables and the position of the magnet.
