Shimano STEPS error codes: E010, W011 and what is really behind them
Shimano STEPS reports faults as short codes on the display. The most important information is already in the first letter: a W is a warning and the bike usually keeps going. An E is an error that switches the assistance off.
The most common codes and what they mean:
- W011: The speed sensor is not delivering plausible values. Usually the gap between magnet and sensor is no longer correct, or the magnet on the spoke has twisted.
- E010: An internal system error in the drive unit. Resetting by disconnecting the battery helps in many cases – if the code returns, the fault lies in the unit's electronics.
- E020 and E021: Communication error between motor and display. Here it pays to check the plug connections and the cable at full handlebar lock.
Check first, replace second: Before you replace any components, check the contacts, the cables and the position of the spoke magnet. Many supposed motor failures are in truth sensor or cable problems – and fixed for a few euros.
