Brose freewheel failure: when the crank suddenly spins freely
The symptom is unmistakable: you pedal, the crank turns – but no power reaches the rear wheel. On the Brose mid-motor the cause almost always lies in the freewheel, which decouples the motor from the bottom bracket.
Typical signs of a worn freewheel:
- Slipping under load: On climbs or when pulling away the drive slips briefly and then bites again.
- Metallic rattling: The pawls strike irregularly instead of ticking evenly.
- Delayed engagement: Noticeably more travel passes between your pedal stroke and the power going through than before.
Cause and remedy: Fine debris and washed-out grease make the pawls stick or round off. Replacing the freewheel costs a fraction of a motor swap and is doable without specialist knowledge as long as the right tool is at hand. Check the belt at the same time.
