E-bike display faulty or showing an error code?
A "black screen" or cryptic error codes (such as the notorious Shimano E010 or Bosch error 500) can end a ride on the spot. Often, though, the problem is not deep inside the motor but in the peripherals.
Checklist for electronics problems:
- Check the contact points: Are the contacts between display and mount clean and dry? Corrosion after winter storage is a common cause of flickering.
- Broken cables: Check the leads from the display to the motor. They are often pinched, especially at full handlebar lock.
- Moisture in the display: If condensation forms behind the screen, the electronics will usually fail before long.
When a replacement is necessary: Displays such as the Brose Allround or Bosch control units are exposed to heavy loads. If the housing is cracked or buttons no longer respond, replacement is usually the only option.
