E-bike display faulty or showing an error code?
A black display or an error code ends the ride. However, the cause need not lie in the motor; it can also be in contacts, cables or sensors.
What the codes say
- Bosch 500: according to Bosch, an internal error of the drive unit.
- Bosch 503: according to Bosch, an error of the speed sensor.
- For both, Bosch names the same first step: restart the system. If the problem persists, the Bosch eBike dealer is the one to contact.

Checklist for electronics problems
- Check the contacts: Are the contacts between the display and the mount clean and dry? Corrosion on contacts can cause flickering and dropouts.
- Check the cables: Inspect the cables from the display to the motor, especially where the handlebars turn, as they can be kinked or pinched there.
- Moisture: If you see condensation behind the screen, switch the system off and have the display checked by a specialist dealer.
When a replacement is necessary
If the housing is cracked or buttons no longer respond, a replacement is an option. Before buying, check whether the display is approved for your drive system. Depending on the bike, the specialist dealer may need to set up the new display.
