E-bike motor care basics: long service life through proper maintenance
An e-bike motor is a gearbox with bearings, seals and electronics in a very confined space. With a few rules, you can avoid typical care mistakes.
Three mistakes you should avoid
- Pressure washer: Bosch, Shimano, Brose and Yamaha explicitly prohibit cleaning the drive with high pressure in their manuals. Otherwise, water can get past the seals into the bearings and electronics. Better: a soft cloth or brush and a little water.
- Ignoring noises: Clicking, grinding or play at the crank are warning signs. Anyone who keeps riding risks consequential damage to the shaft and housing. Our guide E-bike motor clicking or grinding explains how to check a bearing
- Wrong cleaning agents and lubricants: Shimano prohibits thinners and other solvents for cleaning. For bearings and freewheels, only the grease that the manufacturer specifies for the component belongs on it.
Systematic maintenance
Have the drive looked at during the service as well. Wear parts such as bearings, seals, freewheels and lockrings are available individually, for example the lockring for Brose (€14.95) or the lock nut for Yamaha PW (€14.95); prices at bikely as of 10 October 2026. A new lockring, for example, costs significantly less than repairing damaged splines. Work inside the motor belongs in the hands of professionals. Bosch points out that unauthorised opening of the drive unit voids the warranty claim.
