E-bike motor care basics: long service life through proper maintenance

An e-bike motor is a mechanical work of art in the tightest of spaces. For the plastic gears and metal bearings inside to last 10,000 km and more, it takes more than just a full battery.

The three deadly sins for your motor:

  • The pressure washer: Water is forced through the seals into the interior. Once there, it cannot escape and destroys bearings and sensors.
  • Ignoring noises: A slight clicking sound is a warning signal. Keep riding, and you risk a faulty bearing damaging the motor housing or the shaft beyond repair.
  • The wrong lubricant: Never use WD-40 on the motor bearings – it dissolves the vital bearing grease.

Maintenance insider tip: Use special service kits at every major inspection. A new sealing ring or a fresh lockring costs only a few euros but protects the motor from expensive consequential damage. In our category e-bike spare parts you will find everything you need for professional maintenance to the manufacturer's specification.
