E-bike motor clicking or grinding? Causes and repair instead of replacement
The noise usually creeps in gradually: first a faint clicking under load, later a constant grinding you can even feel in the pedals. On forums the diagnosis comes quickly: bearing damage. Yet many riders assume an expensive replacement motor at €700 to €1,000 is now due.
The cause: Usually it is not the motor itself that is faulty, but the outer crankshaft bearings. Pressure washers and rides through mud in particular drive moisture behind the seals. The grease is washed out and the bearings seize or corrode.
The solution: A targeted overhaul.
- Diagnosis: Take hold of the crank arms firmly and check whether they have lateral play. If they do, the bearing is worn out.

- Prevention: After the repair, use high-quality service greases and make sure never to spray cleaner directly onto the bearing seals.
