Bosch Performance Line CX rattling or clacking: normal or a defect?
In short: The rattling of the 4th-generation Bosch Performance Line CX on rough descents is a known phenomenon. Bosch attributes it to vibrations of the drivetrain that excite the gearbox inside the motor. The new CX, available since model year 2025, has a decoupled freewheel and is considered rattle-free in tests. It is a different matter if the motor grinds when pedalling, the crank has play or it feels notchy when backpedalling.
Where the rattling comes from
In a 2024 interview with BIKE-Magazin, a Bosch product manager explained it as follows: with mid-drive motors, mechanical noises can occur in certain riding situations, especially on full-suspension e-MTBs. If the external drivetrain with chain, chainring and cassette starts vibrating over roots or rocks, this excites the gearbox inside the motor.
On the new Performance Line CX (from model year 2025), a new freewheel decouples the drive. BIKE-Magazin found all the new CX units it tested to be rattle-free.
When a noise may indicate a defect
- Grinding or clicking when pedalling under load: may come from the crankshaft bearings. How to check is explained in our guide E-bike motor clicking or grinding
- Lateral play at the crank: Grip both crank arms and shake them. Noticeable play indicates a worn bearing.
- Notchy freewheel: Users report a freewheel that runs roughly when backpedalling or alternately engages and slips.
These signs do not replace a diagnosis. The specialist dealer can check the motor with the Bosch diagnostic system.
Play in the motor mounting: does not affect the 4th generation
In 2025, Bosch acknowledged play in the mounting of the motor in the frame, on drives with the designations BDU31YY, BDU34YY and BDU38YY, mainly Performance Line SX and CX from October 2024. According to Bosch, this affects neither function nor safety. Those affected receive new bushings free of charge via specialist dealers. The 4th generation (BDU450 CX, BDU374x) is not on this list.
Repairing: what Bosch says
Bosch states in its manuals that the drive unit must not be opened by the user, but only by qualified specialist personnel, and that unauthorised opening voids the warranty claim. According to Bosch, maintenance and minor repairs are handled by the specialist dealer, while Bosch collects major defects from the dealer. Outside the statutory warranty and guarantee, specialised motor workshops also carry out repairs. For the 4th generation, crankshaft bearings (€24.95), service kits (€159.95) and the crank freewheel (€54.95) are available as individual parts (prices at bikely as of 10 October 2026). Our guide How much does an e-bike motor repair cost? shows what this costs compared with a replacement motor.
