Undoing the lockring and changing the chainring: avoid the costly mistakes
Replacing the chain and chainring is part of standard maintenance. On an e-bike, however, one hurdle awaits: the lockring. Many DIY mechanics come unstuck here and, in the worst case, ruin the splines on the motor.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them:
- Wrong direction of rotation: Careful – many e-bike systems use a left-hand thread (e.g. Bosch Gen 3/4). Push the wrong way and you will tighten the ring beyond release.
- Cheap tools: A simple universal wrench almost always slips at the high torques involved (often 30–40 Nm). The result is a set of "rounded" splines.
- Dirt in the thread: Small stones and dried mud act like glue. Clean the area thoroughly before you fit the tool.
